UK Baseball's Seth Logue Already Making a Name for Himself

by Tim Letcher

Before ever throwing a pitch for the Kentucky baseball team, Seth Logue had a name that was well-known within the program.

That was due to Seth’s older brother Zach, who pitched for the Cats from 2015-2017, winning 12 games during his career, including seven in his final year. Zach Logue actually started the regional championship game in 2017, one in which UK topped N.C. State 10-5 to advance to the Super Regionals for the first time in school history. Zach Logue is now pitching in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

Meanwhile, Seth Logue is a freshman at UK this season and is making a name for himself as more than just Zach’s younger brother. The younger Logue, who throws right-handed, where his brother was a lefty, was impressive on Tuesday night, picking up his second career save as the Cats held off Bellarmine 4-3 at Kentucky Proud Park.

The freshman entered the game in the eighth inning and retired Bellarmine on just eight pitches. He struck out the final two batters of the inning.

Then in the ninth, Logue gave up a leadoff single, but then got a force out at second base on a ground ball. With one out, UK catcher Coltyn Kessler cut down Bellarmine’s Jack Ockerman, who was attempting to steal. Logue closed out the game with his third strikeout of the game, getting Bellarmine catcher Patrick Arndt to strike out swinging.

UK head coach Nick Mingione was impressed with Logue’s outing on Tuesday.

“His eighth so good, that’s why we gave him the ninth,” Mingione said. “It was so good, it was in attack mode, it was firm, it was through the catcher, it was multiple pitches for strikes. If you’re going to throw that good, you get the next one too, we wanted to reward him for that.”

Logue is now 1-0 on the season with those two saves. In six appearances, he has pitched 10.2 innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. He has walked five batters while striking out a whopping 18 hitters. His ERA dropped to 2.53 after Tuesday’s performance.

Tuesday night was the third time this season that Logue has really impressed for the Cats. On Feb. 26 against Milwaukee, he pitched three innings, allowing three hits but no runs and striking out three. On March 6 against Ball State, Logue again went three innings, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out six. He earned his first career save in that game.

Logue gives Kentucky one more hard-throwing, right-handed option out of the bullpen. He’s still just a freshman but Seth Logue is already proving to be much more than just Zach’s brother.
