Lane Finishes Ninth in the Nation on 1-Meter Springboard
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s swimming and diving team competed in the second day of the 2021 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship on Thursday, as senior diver Chase Lane rallied from 15th place to ninth place to become an All-America Honorable Mention on the 1-meter springboard.
Lane competed in the 46-person field of the 1-meter springboard preliminaries this morning, squeaking into the consolation final after earning 15th place through six rounds on 303.35 points.
Following a 15-minute break, Lane dominated in the consolation final, forcing a lead after his first dive and never looking back. The senior made up more than 50 points from his preliminaries score to his finals score, finishing in ninth place on 354.25 points to earn his first All-America Honorable Mention of the meet and of his career.
Lane’s best dive in both preliminaries and finals was his first dive, the inward two-and-a-half somersault tuck (405C). He rallied a score of 66.65 on his first attempt and a 69.75 on his second attempt. Impressively, Lane improved his preliminaries score on each of his six dives in the consolation final.
Ninth place marks Lane’s best finish at the big dance in his career. Meanwhile, the 354.25 points marks the second-best score on the discipline in his career.
The meet will resume on Friday with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving and 200 medley relay. The preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. ET and finals will begin at 6 p.m. ET.
ESPN3 will provide digital broadcast coverage for all sessions. A full schedule of the meet and direct links to watch the broadcast can be found here.
How It Works
In swimming and diving, the top eight from the preliminary round move on to the “A” final and the next eight move on to the “B” final. Those that finish 1st-8th and are touted as First Team All-America, while those that finish 9th-16th are named Honorable Mention All-America.
