Steiner Wins Three Times, Improves Nation’s Best Time in the 200
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior Abby Steiner won three events, including an improvement in her nation’s-best time in the 200-meter dash, as the No. 12 Kentucky women’s indoor track and field team won five events and the No. 22 men claimed two victories Saturday at the South Carolina Invitational.
Steiner was the day’s headliner for the Wildcats, sweeping the sprint double in the 60-meter and 200m dashes and running a leg on the victorious 4×400-meter relay.
Coming into the meet with the nation’s best time in the 200, her clocking of 22.69 seconds improved the time further and set the facility record at the South Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex. Earlier in the day, Steiner blazed the 60m straightaway with a time of 7.24 seconds.
Kentucky went into top gear(ing) in the mile as graduate student Jenna Gearing won for the second time this season with a personal-best time of 4:42.92. It is the eighth-best indoor mile run in school history. Earlier this season, she won UK’s McCravy-Green Invitational.
Two Wildcat teammates, senior Carly Hinkle and sophomore Annika Williams, actually tied for the high jump title at 5’9.25″ (1.76m) but Hinkle won the tiebreaker based on fewer jumps needed to clear the height.
The Wildcat women capped the day with a win in the 4x400m relay, as Megan Moss, Steiner, Masai Russell and Dajour Miles stormed the oval with a time of 3:32.41.
On the men’s side, Matt Duvall showed why he was the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Freshman of the Year by winning the 5000-meter run in a facility-record time of 14:23.49, also breaking the UK freshman record in the process. The Wildcats dominated the event by winning the top four places as Duvall was followed by freshman Jake Allen, freshman Ethan Kern and sophomore Aaron Withrow.
Senior pole vaulter Matthew Peare won for the second time this season with a lift of 16’11” (5.16m). His triumph came with the help of a tiebreaker, as he tied for the top mark and won by virtue of fewer attempts needed.
Below are the Kentucky event results for the meet.
