Liam Draxl Named SEC Player of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. – After earning the biggest singles win of his career last weekend, Kentucky sophomore Liam Draxl was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-1 Newmarket, Ontario, native entered Wednesday with a perfect 5-0 record on the top singles court. His hot start to the season was highlighted by a decisive 6-4, 6-0 victory over Notre Dame senior Richard Ciamarra, the nation’s No. 6 singles player, during then-No. 21 Kentucky’s 7-0 sweep of the Fighting Irish last Sunday.
Draxl began the season with a No. 45 placement in the Oracle ITA National Preseason Rankings despite not participating in collegiate competition last fall.
Last Sunday’s win avenged a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 three-set thriller Draxl dropped as a freshman to Ciamarra—who was rated the nation’s No. 5 singles player at the time—on the road in January 2020.
