Wildcats to Host In-State Rival Cardinals on Monday

by Connor Link

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After opening fall play at Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex with a decisive two-goal victory last week, Kentucky (1-1) is set to return home for a contest with in-state foe Louisville (0-1) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET, broadcast live on ESPN3.

Since Kentucky’s inaugural varsity men’s soccer season in 1991, the Wildcats have commanded a 12-8-5 lead in the all-time head-to-head series. However, the teams have split the last three meetings 1-1-1, each scoring eight goals over the span.

Last Monday, the Cats bested Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Duke by a score of 4-2. Aimé Mabika, Kalil ElMedkhar, Bailey Rouse and Daniel Evans each put one in the back of the net, with two assists being credited to Robert Screen and one apiece going to Marcel Meinzer, Luis Grassow, Colin Innes and Brandon McManus.

Louisville opened its season with a 3-1 loss to No. 1 Wake Forest at home last Friday. The Cardinals finished last year with a 10-8-2 (3-4-1 ACC) record and a 5-1 loss to eventual national champion Georgetown in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Louisville claimed a 3-0 victory over Kentucky at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium in 2019, mirroring Kentucky’s 3-0 triumph in the Cards’ last visit to the Bell. The teams played to a 2-2 tie in Louisville in 2017.
