Kentucky opened its regular season with a road win at Florida Gulf Coast last Wednesday, earning a 5-2 triumph over a veteran group of Eagles. While in Florida, the team took advantage of a trip to warmer weather and met Loyola Marymount and Virginia Tech for a round-robin, hidden-dual tournament last weekend. The Wildcats collected just four of 13 possible wins at the tournament, while the scores only affected individual overall tennis records and did not affect the team and individual regular-season records.
Freshman Carlota Molina is off to an impressive start to her collegiate career, boasting a 6-1 (.857) record from fall and spring singles action. In the first regular-season match of her career, the newcomer from Gran Canaria, Spain, earned a 7-6(1), 6-2 triumph over Sara Kelly of FGCU, competing on the second court in the singles lineup.
Last season, Northern Kentucky recorded a 7-12 overall record (.368) and a 3-6 mark (.333) in the Horizon League. The Norse returns six of its seven players from 2018-19, and Friday’s match will mark their season opener.
Kennesaw State, which is led by head coach Matt Emery, son of former Kentucky men’s tennis head coach Dennis Emery, posted a 2-17 overall mark last season, including a 1-6 record in the ASUN Conference. The young group of Owls, which is made up of seven underclassmen and three upperclassmen, opened this season with a pair of losses to Georgia Tech, owning a 0-2 record before traveling to Lexington.
