Kentucky Women’s Soccer Falls to Mississippi State on Sunday Afternoon

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky (5-5-2, 0-3-0 SEC) fell, 2-1, to Mississippi State (6-4-1, 1-1-1 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at The Bell.

Hannah Richardson scored the Wildcats’ lone goal of the game in the 17th minute. Marissa Bosco won a penalty in the box after being brought down by a Bulldogs’ defender, which allowed Richardson to convert from the spot for her eighth goal of the season.

Mississippi State found an equalizer in the 87th minute when Zakirah McGillivary found Hailey Farrington-Bentil with a pass in front of goal which Farrington-Bentil slotted home with only a couple of minutes remaining. Just two minutes later, Monigo Karnley would score the winner for the visitors and steal all three points.

Head Coach Ian Carry:
“Unfortunately, our inability, again, to close out a game that we have dominated for 80 or so minutes comes back to bite us,” Kentucky head coach Ian Carry said. “We had multiple opportunities to put this game to bed and we were just not clinical enough in front of goal, or we took the wrong option, but as I said to the girls in the locker room, we’ll get back on it on Tuesday morning at practice. We are lucky that we are in a sport where we’ve got seven games left to play and each and every one of these games becomes more important now. So, I’m disappointed in the result and now we are looking forward to getting back on the practice field on Tuesday and matching up with Tennessee next Sunday down in Knoxville.”

Next Match:
Kentucky travels to Tennessee on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. at Regal Soccer Stadium. That game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
