Men’s Golf to Co-Host Shoal Creek Invitational in Birmingham

by Cole Bollinger

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s golf team will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to play in the Shoal Creek Invitational Monday and Tuesday. The Wildcats are co-hosting the tournament with the Auburn Tigers.

The Wildcats will start the same lineup they have used the past four tournaments. Freshman Cullan Brown returns to the course after his first career top-five finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship on April 7. Brown went 7-under on the weekend and shot an opening round of 64 which tied for the lowest individual round in the Brian Craig era at Kentucky, equaling Jordan Blann’s record from 2009.

“It is a tremendous privilege co-hosting this event with Auburn at Shoal Creek,” Craig said. “What an incredible golf course with an impressive history in championship golf. We have an excellent field and a fabulous test of golf. This is going to be a special week.”

Shoal Creek will play at a par 72 over 7,400 yards. After bad weather swept through the area overnight, the format of the tournament has changed to playing 18 holes on Monday and the remaining 36 holes on Tuesday to complete the 54-hole, two-day tournament. Play will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Monday and at 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available via golfstat.com.

Joining Brown are seniors Lukas Euler, Max Mehles and Fred Allen Meyer as well as junior Matt Liston. At Mason Rudolph, Euler shot his 12th and 13th par or better rounds of the season, giving him 50 for his career. Mehles was able to go even in both rounds two and three at Mason Rudolph.

Meyer and Liston are making their ninth starts of the season this week and are the only two to have started in all eight previous tournaments this season.

Redshirt freshman Zach Norris, senior Fadhli Soetarso, junior Allen Hamilton and sophomore Jacob Cook will play as individuals. Norris has gone back and forth from the starting lineup but has played good golf this year, placing in the top 20 in back-to-back tournaments at Steelwood and the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Kentucky will be joined by 14 teams in Birmingham this weekend including co-host No. 13 Auburn, No. 12 LSU, No. 15 North Florida, No. 22 Tennessee, No. 24 Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Bowling Green State, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, Lamar, North Carolina-Charlotte, Samford and Troy.
