Euler Earns Runner-Up Finish to Conclude General Hackler Championship
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Led by the senior tandem of Lukas Euler and Fred Allen Meyer the Kentucky men’s golf team finished play at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in sixth place on Tuesday. Euler was the tournament’s runner-up and Meyer charted his fourth career top-10 finish to lead the way for the Wildcats.
“What an event for Lukas,” head coach Brian Craig said. “He had a chance to win coming down the stretch and that is all you can ask for. I love seeing him continue to get better after all of his hard work and commitment.”
Euler boasted rounds of 67-68-71 to finish the tournament with a 206 and 10-under scorecard. He was just one stroke back of his career-low 54-hole total, and the runner-up finish matches the best of his career.
The Dieburg, Germany, native began his round by bogeying the par-four opening hole. He responded in a big way with birdies at the fifth, sixth and seventh before garnering an eagle at the par-five eighth to make the turn at 4-under par. After setbacks at the 12th, 13th and 14th, Euler answered with consecutive birdies. He finished his final round at 1-under par and two shots back of the individual winner.
Meyer turned in his best finish of the 2018-19 season with rounds of 73-67-72. He was 4-under par for the tournament and charted a tie for 10th on the leaderboard. The 212 score is the best of the season for Meyer and it marked the fourth top-10 finish of his career.
“An excellent effort by Fred Allen,” Craig added. “He was solid all week and is very, very close to competing for a win this spring season.”
Meyer had a steady round with a pair of birdies on the front nine and one on the back nine to offset three bogeys. He finished the day at even par to maintain the top-10 finish.
“We were close to having a nice event for the team, but I am not too disappointed,” Craig said. “We have a chance to test ourselves again this weekend at the Schenkel and I can’t wait.”
Kentucky wastes little time in getting back to the course with its next event set to begin on Friday. UK has cracked the top five in this event in each of the last four seasons.
North Florida captured the General Hackler Championship by five shots over sixth-ranked Wake Forest. Liberty placed third with Louisville and Georgia rounding out the top five. Kentucky was a mere stroke off the Bulldogs’ pace for a top-five finish.
Freshman Cullan Brown, competing as an individual, carded the best tournament of his young career. Brown fired an even-par 72 on the last day of play to place in a tie for 26th overall on the individual leaderboard. Brown scored a birdie at the par-five fourth and eagled the par-five eighth. He also had birdies on the 11th and 15th. He finished 2-over par for the tournament.
Junior Matt Liston rallied with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to move into a tie for 36th. He capped the tournament at 4-over par. Senior Max Mehles logged a 224 and redshirt freshman Zach Norris posted a 229 to finish in a tie for 60th and a tie for 68th, respectively.
