UK Surges into Fifth to Conclude Fall Season at Steelwood

by Deb Moore

LOXLEY, Ala. – Paced by a 3-under round from senior Lukas Euler the Kentucky men’s golf team made a push during the final round of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and finished fifth overall for its best finish of the fall slate.

“Yesterday was a tough, tough day for the Wildcats,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “We came to life today and had a chance to put up a stellar round. We came close and I am proud of our effort. We really need this offseason to regroup and get back on track. We have always played better in the spring and this year will be no exception.”

Euler played like a man on a mission opening his round with back-to-back-to-back birdies. After three straight pars, he put up another red number on his seventh hole of the round. He finished the day with a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for 19th on the individual leaderboard to pace the Wildcats. It’s his second-consecutive top-20 finish and the 16th of his career.

Senior Fred Allen Meyer also turned in an under-par scorecard with a final round 70 at 2-under par. Meyer played the back nine on the course at 2-under and had four birdies on the front nine to offset three setbacks. Meyer moved into a tie for 33rd with his third-under par round of the season.

Junior Matt Liston tied for 33rd with a final round of 76 on Sunday. Classmate Allen Hamilton shot a three-over 75 to move into a tie for 50th. Senior Max Mehles finished in 43rd with a 76 during Sunday’s round.

Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Zach Norris carded his first-career top-20 finish. Norris fired a round of 71. He tied for 19th overall with four birdies on the back nine of the course, including three straight on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

Senior Fadhli Soetarso, also playing as an individual, tied for 48th with a 76 during Sunday’s round. Sophomore Jacob Cook placed 70th.

Wake Forest won the event, bettering the field by 16 strokes. Mississippi State was second, Kennesaw State took third and Indiana was just ahead of the Cats in fourth.

Sunday’s round concludes the fall slate for the Wildcats. UK will return to action at the Seminole Intercollegiate Feb. 23-24, 2019.
