Kentucky Swimming and Diving Opens Season on the Road
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming and diving teams will make the short haul to Bloomington, Indiana, to compete in the first meet of the 2018-19 season on Wednesday.
The road meet will feature Big Ten Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference foes, Indiana and Notre Dame, respectively. Missouri will also be in attendance, though the Wildcats and the Tigers will not compete against one-another. Missouri will host Kentucky on Nov. 1-2.
Wednesday’s quad meet will function as three separate dual meets in one. It will start at 10 a.m. in the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The schedule of events includes 14 races, each consisting of two heats, with the diving contest occurring simultaneously.
Live scoring will be available at http://athletics.indiana.edu/livestats/sw.htm.
Kentucky is eager to open the season after putting their talent to the test Friday in the annual Sun Shall Shine meet. The Blue-White scrimmage featured each swimmer and diver in the program, allowing the athletes to practice and compete in a competitive setting ahead of a strong schedule.
In Friday’s spectacle, Kentucky improved its top times in 15 events, compared to last season’s Blue-White results.
The program consists of 47 returning athletes and 14 newcomers. Making the trip for the men are Wyatt Amdor, Bowen Anderson, Shane Anderson, Kyle Barker, Matthew Beach, Daniel Blake, Connor Blandford, Glen Brown, David Dingess, Austin Haney, Jason Head, Jarod Kehl, Chase Lane, John Mitchell, Daniel Orcutt, Hank Siefert, Nick Smith, Josh Swart, Alex Taylor, Peter Wetzlar and Mason Wilby.
Traveling for the women’s team are Bailey Bonnett, Kayla Churman, Courtney Clark, Emma Dellmore, Lauren Denham, Savannah DuPuis, Lauren Edelman, Kailey Francetic, Geena Freriks, Riley Gaines, Ali Galyer, Izzy Gati, Jaclyn Hill, Paige Kelly, Kyndal Knight, Haley McInerny, Payton Neff, Alex Nelson, Alaina Potts, Kelly Rodriguez, Asia Seidt, Sophie Sorenson, Meredith Whisenhunt and Madison Winstead.
Wednesday’s meet is considered one of the toughest competitions on our schedule. Indiana’s men’s team completed the 2017-18 season ranked third in the CSCAA polls, while the women finished ninth. Hoosier standout Lilly King will return as a senior. King won her third-straight NCAA title in her last campaign, while also setting a record for the best breaststroke time in history – 2:02.60. Notre Dame’s men and women finished No. 19, a spot that each team claimed for the better half of the season.
