Mehles Posts 2-Under Round to Lead UK on Day Two

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Paced by a 2-under-par 69 from senior Max Mehles and the steady play from classmate Fred Allen Meyer, the Kentucky men’s golf team concluded the second day of action at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge on Saturday.
Mehles boasted the best round of the day for the Wildcats, while Meyer is seeking the first individual top-20 finish of the season for UK. Kentucky enters the final round tied for 10th and 10 shots off the pace for a top-five team finish.
Kentucky will tee off beginning at 8:12 a.m. ET on Sunday to conclude action in its season-opening tournament. The course is set up as a par-71, 7,101-yard event. The field is comprised of two teams in the top 20 in the preseason Golfstat.com rankings. Six programs are rated among the top 50.
Mehles began his round on the par-four 10th and picked up momentum quickly with a birdie on the opening hole. After giving the shot back on the 13th, he rebounded with another birdie at the par-four 15th. His third red number of the round came at the par-five fifth before an eagle at the par-four sixth ignited his round. He finished the day at 2-under par and ascended 28 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 48th.
Meyer sits in a tie for 21st through two rounds after an even-par round. He had three birdies on the afternoon and is in prime position to earn his seventh career top-20 individual finish.
Senior Fadhli Soetarso and junior Matt Liston have matched Mehles’ score through the opening two rounds and they are all tied for 48th on the leaderboard. Soetarso had a round of 74, while Liston shot a 72 on Saturday.
Sophomore Jacob Cook is tied for 76th and junior Allen Hamilton is 85th through 36 holes of play.
Play resumes at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday as the 16-team field rounds out the tournament. Live stats continue to be available via Golfstat.com.
Duke remains atop the leaderboard heading into the final round. The hosts Louisville head into Sunday in second. South Florida, Mississippi State and Wake Forest round out the top five.
