Kentucky Men’s Tennis Names Matthew Gordon Assistant Coach
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Matthew Gordon has been named an assistant coach for the Kentucky men’s tennis team, head coach Cedric Kauffmann announced Friday afternoon.
“I am really excited to have Matt on our staff,” Kauffmann said. “He brings a lot of knowledge, work ethic and organizational skills that will help our team transform into a top team in the country again. He has worked with some of the best players at every level of the game from the best juniors in the world and pros that are on the circuit right now. He knows the path to success in our sport and he will do a great job teaching these steps to our players. I welcome him to our program and family.”
Gordon comes to Kentucky from the Saddlebrook International Sports Academy, where he spent six years. Gordon coached multiple top ranked USTA and ITF Junior Players. At Saddlebrook, Gordon spent time on court with some of the best players in the world, including John Isner and Jack Sock.
“I am very happy and honored to become a part of the University of Kentucky,” Gordon said. “Coach Kauffmann is one of the best coaches out there and I would like to thank him for this opportunity. This is a very talented team with a lot of potential and I am looking forward to getting to work with them.”
Gordon also worked as a Touring Program Coach on the ATP. He was the private coach of Alex Kuznetsov, who reached No. 120. Other players he has worked with include Denis Kudla, who reached No. 80 under Gordon and Roberto Cid, who is at a career high of No. 226.
Prior to working with the Saddlebrook Touring Pro Program, he ran the Saddlebrook ITF Junior Boys group.
A top amateur in Great Britain before college, Gordon spent two years at Fairleigh Dickinson and two years at Costal Carolina. Gordon won the Northeast Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 and also won the conference whilst earning first team honors. At Coastal Carolina, he reached a ranking of No. 82 in the nation and was a member of the First Team Big South. After graduating from Coastal Carolina with a B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing, he spent a sixth months as the Volunteer Assistant Coach for CCU.
