Shipley Tabbed to Women’s Golf SEC Community Service Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kentucky women’s golfer Sarah Shipley was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team by the league office on Thursday.
Shipley has been a mainstay in the community during her UK career. She traveled to Panama in the summer of 2017 as part of a UK Athletics service trip. In Panama, served people by serving lunch and playing games with at-risk youth that attend an inner-city school in Panama City, participated in building a community center in a poor neighborhood just outside the city, traveled to a rural school and ran a daylong sports clinic, and interacted with indigenous people from the Embera group along the Chagres River.
The sophomore from Hastings, Michigan, has visited patients at Shriners Hospitals to spend time with the patients and play games with the children undergoing care. She has also volunteered for Salvation Army bell ringing during the holiday season to raise money for homeless families and volunteered for the Louisiana flood relief drive to supply those affected by a devastating flood.
On the course, Shipley enjoyed a breakout sophomore season, posting career bests in stroke average (75.3), 18-hole low (68), 54-hole low (219) and top-20 finishes (two). The Wildcats used all 17 of her scores towards the team total in 2017-18, and her 75.0 stroke average in the spring was tops on the team.
Shipley finished the season particularly strong by tying for 13th place at the Southeastern Conference Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, with a 220, just missing her career-low 54-hole score by a stroke. Earlier in the spring, Shipley tied for ninth at the Clover Cup in Mesa, Arizona, with a career-best 219, including a 68 in the second round.
The annual SEC Community Service Team recognizes the superior community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes. The SEC Community Service Team consists of one student-athlete from each SEC institution, as nominated by the school’s personnel. The SEC names a community service team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports.
