No. 18 Kentucky Drops Regular Season Finale to No. 25 Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. – The Kentucky men’s tennis season dropped the regular season finale to No. 25 Georgia, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Dan Magill tennis center in Athens. With the loss, UK will finish the regular season 14-10 and 7-5 in Southeastern Conference play. Georgia finished 12-9 and 5-7 in the SEC.
Kentucky gained an early advantage with the doubles point. The No. 36 duo of Cesar Bourgois and Gus Benson earned a ranked win over No. 15 Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski, 6-4. Will Bushamuka and Austin clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Wayne Montgomery and Nathan Ponwith.
Georgia tied the match at 1-1 when No. 38 Jan Zielinski took down No. 53 Will Bushamuka, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Bushamuka is 9-7 this season.
UK regained the lead when Austin Hussey earned his second ranked win of the season. Hussey defeated No. 93 Nathan Ponwith, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for the Cats second point of the match. Hussey earned his first win of the year on the No. 4 court and has victories on No. 2, No. 3, No.4, No. 5 and No. 6 this year.
The Bulldogs evened the match once again when No.59 Emil Reinberg beat Trey Yates on the third court,5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 9 Ryo Matsumura earned another ranked win to put the Cats back up. Matsumura beat No. 29 Wayne Montgomery, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-2. Matsumura is now 17-3 overall and is 9-2 against nationally ranked opponents.
Georgia tied the match once again when Cesar Bourgois fell to Robert Loeb, 6-2, 4-6. UGA clinched the match when Alex Diaz beat Gus Benson defeated Gus Benson, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
