No. 20 Kentucky Falls at No. 2 Vanderbilt, 4-1
NASHVILLE – The No. 20 Kentucky women’s tennis team put up a fight with highly competitive singles play, but fell 4-1 to No. 2 Vanderbilt at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville on Saturday afternoon.
The Commodores claimed the first point of the match with doubles wins on courts two and three. On court one, Emily Fanning and Lesedi Jacobs were locked in a tight battled against Vandy’s Emily Smith/Emma Kurtz, trailing 3-4 as the point was clinched.
Kentucky (12-7, 4-5 Southeastern Conference) evened the score at one as Jacobs picked up a big win in No. 5 singles, downing Smith, 6-2, 6-2. The point was Kentucky’s lone score of the match.
Vanderbilt (15-3, 8-1 SEC) went up 3-1 as Brianna Tulloch was defeated 6-3, 6-2 in No. 6 singles and Justina Mikulskyte fell to fifth-ranked Fernanda Contreras in straight sets on court one.
The remaining three singles courts were extremely close, but after a marathon first set that resulted in a 11-9 tiebreaker, Fanning ultimately fell to No. 39 Christina Rosca, 7-6 (9), 6-2.
As play finished, sophomore Diana Tkachenko was knotted at 1-1 in the third set with Kurtz on court four and senior Mami Adachi led No. 97 Amanda Meyer, 4-3, in third set on court three.
Up next, the Wildcats will return to Lexington for their final home stand of the season. UK will take on LSU at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, before taking on Texas A&M on Saturday, April 7, for Senior Day.
