Euler, Mehles Surge as UK Remains in Second at Hootie

Day Two Results

AWENDAW, S.C. – Junior Lukas Euler and freshman Max Mehles combined to shoot 7-under par for the day as the Kentucky men’s golf team remains in second through two rounds of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Monday.

Euler surged into third place on the individual leaderboard behind a 4-under, 68, to lead the way for the Wildcats, while Mehles was UK’s biggest gainer moving into a tie for eighth with a 3-under during Monday’s second round.

The Wildcats are two shots off the lead with 18 holes to play. Kentucky was one of just two teams to finish the round under par.

“Today was a very difficult day to score,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “Lukas Euler and Max Mehles led the way today with exceptional rounds. We are right in the hunt going in the final round. It should be a fun challenge for the boys.”

Kentucky will enter the final round trailing Kent State by a mere two shots. The Cats sit 8-under-par for the tournament and are in second, ahead of Iowa State (-5), Ole Miss (-4) and Missouri (+1) who round out the top five among a strong field that features 13 of 15 teams ranked inside the top 100 of Golfstat’s rankings.

Player Roundup

Euler began his round in prolific manner. He birdied each of the first three holes before carding an eagle on the par-five sixth to quickly get his round to 5-under par. Bogeys on the eighth and 10th were offset with another red number on the par-four 11th. Euler would earn par the rest of the way to finish his round at 4-under and get within a shot of the leader heading into the final day. Euler’s round was the low number on the course during Monday’s competition.

Mehles nearly matched Euler’s pace with birdies on the par-four No. 1 and the par-five No. 2. A bogey on the fourth was erased immediately with a birdie on the fifth. He finished the front nine at 3-under after earning another birdie, this time on the par-four eighth. Mehles had a birdie on the 10th and a bogey on the 18th to conclude the day at 3-under par and inside the top 10 on the leaderboard. It marked his second-consecutive par-or-better round after beginning the tournament with an even-par 72.

Senior Cooper Musselman and junior Fred Allen Meyer both turned in 75s on Monday. Musselman sits in a tie for 13th and is even-par for the tournament, while Meyer is tied for 17th and 1-over through 36 holes. Senior Chip McDaniel is tied for 37th after a 77 on day two.
