No. 21 Kentucky Defeats Auburn, 5-2
AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 21 Kentucky (12-5, 5-1 SEC) took down Auburn (9-11, 0-5 SEC), 5-2, on Friday night at the Yarbrough Tennis Center after Ryo Matsumura clinched the win for UK.
The No. 31 duo of Gus Benson and Cesar Bourgois clinched the doubles point for UK with a 6-3 win over Edward Nguyen and Matteo De Vincentis on the No. 1 court. Will Bushamuka and Austin Hussey got things started for UK with a 6-3 win of their own.
UK went up 2-0 when Enzo Wallart breezed past Olle Thestrup, 6-0, 6-1. Wallart is 9-3 this season and 6-2 on the No. 3 court.
Auburn cut the Wildcats lead to 2-1 when Lorenzo Rodriguez beat Cesar Bourgois, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Trey Yates made it 3-1 when he beat Carles Sarrio, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Auburn punched back to make it 3-2 after Tad Maclean won two tiebreakers to beat Austin Hussey, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-0).
No. 26 Ryo Matsumura put UK up 4-2 when he beat Edward Nguyen, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 on the No. 1 court. Matsumura is now 12-1 and has won seven straight.
After Kentucky clinched the match, Will Bushamuka earned his first ranked win of the year when he beat No. 109 Matteo De Vincentis, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Kentucky will continue SEC play on Sunday against Mississippi State.
