Ebwea-Bile Begins Outdoor Season With School-Record Triple Jump

by Jake Most

ORLANDO, Fla. – Kentucky track and field junior Marie-Josée Ebwea-Bile locked up the school records in the triple jump on Friday at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge to begin the outdoor season.

The meet will conclude on Saturday.

Ebwea-Bile won the triple jump with a wind-legal outdoor personal best 44’3.25″/13.49m (-0.8). Teammate Latavia Coombs placed second with a mark of 42’6.0″/12.95m (nwi).

The 2017 NCAA outdoor silver medalist has an indoor personal best of 45’1.75″/13.76m, which she recorded this past indoor season. That mark is the absolute (indoor and outdoor) school record.

She took bronze at the Southeastern Conference Championships last month and placed sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend.

Ebwea-Bile took NCAA silver last June with a wind-assisted 44’11.00″/13.69mw (+2.6) at NCAAs last season.

Prior to this season, notably, 2018 PyeongChang skeleton Winter Olympian for Nigeria Simidele Adeagbo held both the indoor and outdoor school records.

David Cline tossed a hammer throw mark that moved him into No. 2 position on the all-time UK performers’ list winning his first competition of the season. His mark was 217’6″/66.29m, more than four inches better than his prior PR, which he recorded at his last meet of the 2017 season.

Logan Bryer placed fourth, while Charles Lenford Jr. produced a PB of 189’4″/57.70m, which ranks No. 7 on the UK all-time list.

Benjamin Young was also an event winner on Saturday. He cruised first across the finish line in the 1,500m with a time of 3:45.32. Kendall Muhammad was second (3:48.14) and Matthew Thomas was third (3:48.21).

Katy Kunc was top Wildcat in the women’s 1,500m, fourth overall in 4:27.06. Michelle McKinney (4:33.22) and Avery Bussjager (4:33.36 – personal best) were fifth and sixth respectively.

Ethan Shalaway placed fourth in his javelin season opener tossing a mark of 216’0″/65.85. Elijah Marta was 10th with a mark of 178’4″/54.35m.
