Kentucky Earns All-America Honorable Mention in 800 Free Relay

by Karlie Kinneer

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kentucky kicked off action at the 2018 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday evening, setting a new school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:57.20 to finish 11th and earn All-America honorable mention distinction.

The Wildcat lineup of Ali Galyer, Asia Seidt, Haley McInerny and Geena Freriks teamed up to break the previous school record of 6:57.51 which placed sixth at last year’s NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.

“It’s always good to break the school record,” said Kentucky head coach Lars Jorgensen. “It was a good start, but tomorrow’s going to be a big day, so we’re going to come out and be better tomorrow.”

This is the fourth consecutive season that the Wildcats have earned at least All-America honorable mention in the event, including Kentucky’s first-ever First-Team All-America performance in the race a season ago.

The 2018 NCAA Championships will be in full swing Thursday with the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay starting at 10 a.m. ET, and the finals beginning at 6 p.m.

ESPNU will broadcast live the championship finals session Friday starting at 5 p.m. ET. The finals session on Saturday will be streamed live by ESPN3 starting at 6 p.m. The additional sessions can be streamed on the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships microsite at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com. Tape delayed coverage of the women’s championships will be broadcast on Sunday, March 25 at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
