Kevin Frebel Secures First NCAA Berth on 1-Meter

by Karlie Kinneer

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kentucky sophomore Kevin Frebel qualified for his NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon, finishing eighth on the 1-meter springboard with a cumulative score of 662.80 at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Seb Masterton also qualified in the event with a fifth-place finish.

“Thought we had a pretty good day on the men’s side,” said Kentucky diving coach Ted Hautau. “The guys were consistent. Three guys in the finals and each one climbed up on the finals. Kevin made a pretty big run back in the finals and showed a lot of poise and confidence. Looking forward to tomorrow. I think we’re going to have a good day on platform.”

Masterton tacked on his second NCAA qualification in as many days after earning his place at the championships on the 3-meter board Thursday. The junior captain finished fifth overall on 1-meter Friday with a cumulative score of 691.05.

With only the top 10 qualifiers advancing out of the men’s 1-meter competition, Frebel sat in 12th after the prelims with a score of 307.05. The sophomore rallied in the finals, jumping four spots to nab the qualification to his first national meet.

“I was pretty happy about getting into finals,” said Frebel. “Moving onto finals was just pretty relaxed, just wanted to go out and have some fun. I missed one of my dives but it was OK because I was able to put some other ones down that I needed to in order to get a spot. Pretty excited about that. NCAAs should be fun.”

Freshman Chase Lane also competed in his first zone final, finishing 15th overall with a score of 613.45.

The NCAA Zone C Diving Championships will continue for the third and final day on Saturday.  The women’s platform competition will begin at 11 a.m. ET, while the men’s will start at 2 p.m.  Live results are available here.
