Kentucky Women Sixth, Men Ninth After Day Three of SEC Championships
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Kentucky swimming and diving team wrapped up day three of the 2018 Southeastern Conference Championships on Friday evening in College Station, Texas. As it stands, the Wildcat women are in sixth place with 350 points, while the Kentucky men in ninth with 326 points.
“It was a good day for the Cats,” said Kentucky head coach Lars Jorgensen. “The night was highlighted by Kathryn Painter who had a really nice swim in the 400 IM. It’s going to be a time that gets invited to NCAAs, so couldn’t be more proud of her in coming back and swimming awesome tonight. Across the board we had a really good day. I think our best days are yet to come, so we’re really excited about the next two days and trying to finish the best we can with as many points as possible.”
Junior Kathryn Painter lowered her own program record in the 400-yard individual medley to win the B final and place ninth overall in the event. Her time was the fourth-fastest of all three heats in the evening session. Freshman Lauren Edelman also scored in the event, finishing 14th overall with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:11.44.
In the men’s 400 IM, sophomore Glen Brown finished 20th overall with at time of 3:46.73 and Connor Blandford finished 21st in 3:46.81 to both score for the Wildcats.
Junior Haley McInerny scored for the women in the 100 butterfly, touching sixth in the B final to finish 14th overall with a time of 53.42. Junior David Dingess was UK’s top finisher for the men in the event, placing 19th at 47.20 – a mark which now ranks fifth all-time for the Wildcats.
Both Emma Dellmore and Courtney Clark added points in the women’s 3-meter diving competition, with Dellmore finishing 13th with a score of 302.00 and Clark 17th with a 278.75.
After winning the 500 freestyle on Thursday night, Geena Freriks returned tonight in the 200 free, finishing 10th overall with a time of 1:45.52. Sophomore Ali Galyer finished 13th, touching the wall in 1:46.27.
Three Wildcats appeared in the C final of the men’s 200 free, with sophomores John Mitchell finishing 19th in 1:36.02, Jason Head 21st in 1:36.19 and Peter Wetzlar 22nd in 1:36.45.
Kentucky will be back in action for the penultimate day of the SEC Championships on Saturday. The schedule is set to include the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, men’s platform and 400 medley relay.
