Kentucky Defeated by No. 20 Duke, 4-1
DURHAM, N.C. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to No. 20 Duke on Sunday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Wildcats fell to 6-3 on the year while Duke improved to 5-2.
Duke grabbed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The duo of Nick Stachowiak and Sean Sculley was the first Blue Devil duo to earn a win as they beat Gus Benson and Enzo Wallart on court one, 6-1. DU won the doubles point when Nicolas Alvarez and Catalin Mateas beat Cesar Bourgois and Ryo Matsumura, 6-4. Will Bushamuka and Trey Yates were locked in a 4-4 battle on court three when play was called.
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 2-0 after Kento Yamada fell to Ryan Dickerson, 6-3, 6-2. Yamada suffered is second loss of the season and is now 5-2 this year overall and 3-1 on the No. 5 court.
Duke kept the momentum going after No. 53 Nicolas Alvarez took down Will Bushamuka in a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 match on the top court. Bushamuka is 1-3 so far this season, all on the No. 1 court.
Austin Hussey put Kentucky on the board after beating Robert Lebine, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Hussey is 5-2 this season and has not lost on the No. 6 court so far.
Duke clinched the win when No. 40 Matsumura fell to Catalin Mateas, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Enzo Wallart and Trey Yates were still on the court and locked in three set battles when play was called.
The Wildcats will return to action to face Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 25. At 1 p.m. at the Boone Tennis Center.
