Kentucky Men’s Tennis Earns 4-1 Win over Wisconsin in ITA Kick-Off Consolation Round
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team wrapped up the ITA Kick-Off weekend on a high note after taking down Wisconsin, 4-1, in the consolation match of the tournament at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Wildcats improved to 3-2 on the year while Wisconsin fell to 2-2.
Wisconsin grabbed the doubles point to take an early 6-3 lead. The duo of No. 9 Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge was the first court to clinch, winning 6-3 over the duo of Enzo Wallart and Cesar Bourgois. Jake Stefanik and Austin Hussey fell on court three to Osgar O’holsin and Daniel Soyfer, 6-3, to hand the Badgers the doubles point. Gus Benson and Ryo Matsumura was up 5-3 on the second court when play was called.
No. 84 Will Bushamuka came up with his first win of the season to tie the match at 1-1. Bushamuka took down Lamar Remy on the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 1-1 this season.
No. 34 Matsumura gave the Cats a 2-1 advantage after breezing by Chema Carranze, 6-2, 6-4. Matsumura is now a perfect 5-0 this season and has four wins on the No. 2 court.
Kentucky clinched the win after two quick wins on court four and five. Enzo Wallart was the third singles player to finish, beating Osgar O’Holsin, 6-4, 6-2. Kento Yamada earned his second win of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Chase Colton to hand the match for the Wildcats.
No. 77 Trey Yates and Jake Stefanik were in a good position to win when play was called. Yates was up 6-4, 5-5 while Jake Stefanik was up 6-4, 6-5.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 2 when UK takes on Chattanooga and IUPUI in a doubleheader. UK will take on Mocs at 10 a.m. and the Jaguars at 3 p.m. inside the Boone Tennis Center.
