Abigail Zoeller Named SEC Freshman of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s soccer midfielder turned goalkeeper Abigail Zoeller has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Friday afternoon. Kentucky head coach Ian Carry has now coached five different goalkeepers to seven different SEC Player of the Week honors in his time at Kentucky.
Zoeller, who had never trained as a full-time goalkeeper in her soccer career, stepped up when her team needed her, and posted a road shutout in Athens on Thursday night as the Wildcats beat Georgia 3-0. The clean sheet was made possible by seven saves, including two 1v1’s that were stopped when the Dawgs got in behind on goal.
The Independence, Kentucky native has played GK for the Wildcats the last four matches, as Evangeline Soucie’s season ended on a concussion that was suffered in the Missouri match back in early October. Zoeller is an everyday midfielder who appeared in the first 14 matches of her career as a midfielder or a forward.
Kentucky’s season ended on an emphatic high note Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Georgia – closing the chapter on the first year of the Carry Era in Lexington with eight wins overall and three SEC wins, two more wins than just a season ago in both categories. The Wildcats will be returning offensive firepower in the form of Tanya Samarzich, Marissa Bosco, Miranda Jimenez and Foster Ignoffo in addition to numerous 2018 freshman that is sure to be one of the best in the league.
