White Team Victorious in Season-Opening Intrasquad
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming and diving program officially began its competition season on Friday afternoon, hosting its annual ‘Sun Shall Shine’ Blue-White Intrasquad inside the Lancaster Aquatic Center. It was a close meet to the finish, but the White team pulled away in the end to take bragging rights with a 301-286 victory.
“I thought both teams performed well,” said head coach Lars Jorgensen. “We were trying to break a few meet records and I think we exceeded our expectations in terms of that. We know it’s early in the season and both teams have a long way to go, but we’re really looking forward to Vanderbilt on Wednesday.”
The White team was highlighted by performances from sophomores Glen Brown and Ali Galyer, and freshman Bailey Bonnett. On the men’s side, Brown picked up a pair of wins in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM. For the women, Galyer won both the 200 and 500 free. In her collegiate debut, Bonnett secured a trio of victories in the 200 IM, and both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
The Blue team was led by sophomores Asia Seidt and Peter Wetzlar, and senior Isaac Jones. Seidt won three events on the day, coming into the wall first in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Wetzlar had a pair of wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, and Jones turned in two top finishes in the 500 and 1000 free.
Kentucky will officially open its season on Wednesday, Oct. 4 as the women host Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. The men’s team make its debut Oct. 14, as both teams take on Eastern Michigan inside the Lancaster Aquatic Center at 1 p.m.
