LONDON – Two members of the 2017 Kentucky track and field team, a further five Wildcat alumni plus two more UK volunteer assistant coaches will compete at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in Athletics to be contested in the British capital over the next 10 days.

From the 2017 Wildcats, senior Sha’Keela Saunders – herself the 2017 NCAA Indoor Long Jump Champion – and junior transfer Kayelle Clarke – the 2017 NCAA 4x100m Relay Champion (leg three) – are in London to compete. Saunders will represent the United States in the long jump, while Clarke qualified to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the 200 meters.

Three American Wildcats – Saunders, Andrew Evans and Kendra Harrison – qualified to represent the Stars and Stripes. Evans was the only Wildcat on the U.S. track and field Olympic Team last summer.

The 14th IAAF World Championships will be contested at London Stadium Aug. 4 to Aug. 13.

The networks of NBC, including the new Olympic Channel, own the broadcast rights to the World Championships in the U.S.

The biennial event is being held inside the building that was the main venue for the 2012 Olympic Games, and is current home to English Premier League side West Ham United. Notably, Kentucky alumna and current volunteer assistant coach Kendra Harrison broke the 100-meter hurdles world record in that stadium at the London Anniversary Games last July.

Harrison – coming off her first USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship in June – has the current world lead in her signature event having run 12.28 — .08 off the world record – in Hungary on July 4. Harrison’s first prelim will be Friday, Aug. 11.

Evans will be the first Wildcat to compete at the 2017 World Championships when he represents the U.S. starting at 2:20 p.m. ET in men’s discus qualifying. The Class of 2014 alumnus and two-time Southeastern Conference Champion is ranked eighth in the world this year with a personal best mark 218’6″/66.61m early this spring. He claimed silver at the USATF outdoor championships to qualify for Team USA.

On Sunday, two-time SEC Champion UK alumnus Luis Orta (Venezuela) will make his World Championships men’s marathon debut. Orta placed 106th running 2:27.05 at the Olympics in Rio last summer.

UK alumna Hiruni Wijayaratne is also slated to make her World Championships debut in the women’s marathon representing Sri Lanka. Wijayaratne won the Eugene Marathon in Oregon earlier this year.

UK volunteer assistant, and Arkansas product Omar McLeod – the reigning Olympic 110m hurdles Champion who is now being trained by UK head coach Edrick Floreal – will get his World Championships account under way on Sunday as well.

The women’s 400m hurdles – with 2016 Olympic finalist UK alumna Leah Nugent and training partner Kori Carter (a Stanford graduated who now lives in Lexington, assists the UK program and works with Floreal) – gets under way on Monday, Aug. 7. The semifinals are Tuesday and the final is Thursday.

Kayelle Clarke is entered in the 200m heats for Tuesday, Aug. 8. Clarke is also in T&T’s 4x100m relay pool, and that event will be contested over the final weekend.

Saunders will begin her first major international championship with long jump qualifying on Wednesday.
