Two Wildcats to be Inducted into KY HS Basketball Hall of Fame

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Current University of Kentucky women’s basketball associate head coach Kyra Elzy and former four-year letterwinner Lisa Collins have been named to the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame 2017 Class of Inductees and will be enshrined into the hall of fame this summer. 

The 2017 class will be the sixth class to be inducted into the hall of fame, with ceremonies scheduled for this July in Elizabethtown, Ky. UK standout Carly Ormerod Bell was a member of the 2016 class, joining former UK star Geri Grigsby who was a member of the 2012 class.

The KHSBHF is dedicated to promoting and educating the public about the culture, tradition and rich heritage of Kentucky high school basketball. It honors and provides a fitting tribute to former players and coaches, while preserving and displaying historical information and memorabilia associated with the game. 

Elzy, who is in her second stint on staff for the Wildcats, is set to begin her sixth season in the program and second in her most recent role as associate head coach. A native of LaGrange, Ky., Elzy has helped lead the Kentucky women’s basketball program to unprecedented heights with the Wildcats reaching the NCAA Tournament every year she’s been on staff, including two Elite Eight appearances. 

Prior to attending Tennessee, where she was a member of two national championship teams under legendary head coach Pat Summitt, Elzy was a two-time All-America selection by Parade Magazine and Street & Smith at Oldham County High School. Elzy has been recognized as one of the best high school players to come out of Kentucky after she led Oldham County to two KHSAA regional titles and a semifinal appearance in the 1993 KHSAA Sweet Sixteen tournament. Elzy scored 3,000 points, garnered 1,700 rebounds and had 449 assists while stealing the ball 516 times over a stellar career. An all-around athlete, Elzy also saw success in cross country and track and field where she was a state champion in the 400 meter dash as a junior.

A four-year star with the Wildcats from 1980-1984, Collins played in 115 career games for UK scoring 952 points. The native of Corbin, Ky., started at UK as a guard before switching over to play a hybrid guard/forward. During her senior season, Collins scored a career-best 32 points against Vanderbilt with 15 made field goals, which ranks as the seventh most field goals made in a game in program history. Collins also ranks eighth all-time in program history in career field-goal percentage. 

A key player of the Laurel County girls’ basketball dynasty, Collins led the Cardinals to three KHSAA State Championships in 1977, 1978 and 1979, scoring 140 career points in the Sweet Sixteen. Collins was a member of the KHSAA All-Tournament Team in 1979 and earned all-state honors in 1978, 1979, 1980, capping off her career by being named Miss Kentucky Basketball in 1980.
