PHILADELPHIA – Kentucky track and field’s Jacob Thomson showed off a measure of strong form to take into the postseason by winning the 5,000 meters at the Pennsylvania Relays Carnival late Thursday night.
The junior ran 13:53.04 in his first outdoor 5k of the year, well faster than he ran at any point during the indoor season, and about 10 seconds behind what he ran at the Payton Jordan Invitational the corresponding weekend a year ago. His time was about a second slower than his time on Thursday to win the SEC 5k last May.
In her first outdoor 5k of the season, Katy Kunc placed fourth in 16:17.74, an outdoor personal best that ranks sixth on the UK all-time performers’ list.
Amy Hansen placed 20th in the 3k steeplechase with her season-best time of 10:35.05.
Mick Iacofano finished 10th in the 10k in 30:22.07.
After distance runners competed at Penn on Thursday a large group of Wildcats will contest the Southeastern Conference Relays this weekend at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
The SEC Relays kick off Friday at 4 p.m. ET with the women’s discus. The first running event – the sprint medley relay – will go off at 6:30 p.m. ET.
The meet won’t be broadcast in any form so optimal ways to follow include following @KentuckyTrack handles on TwitterInstagram and Facebook, and live results via Delta Timing.
Unpacking the SEC Relays
The SEC Relays, contested two weeks before the Conference Championships, will take place at Bernie Moore Stadium on the LSU campus.
The inaugural meet will feature a novel if untested format. Events will be scored using the traditional NCAA format (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1) with the winner scoring 10 trickling down to eighth place scoring one.
Only SEC institutions were invited to the meet and nine entered: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
The high scoring team will win with the wrinkle that scoring is co-ed. The institutions are competing with men’s and women’s scores combined.
Teams can score in 18 relays – 14 of them in relatively typical relays, those being the men’s and women’s 4×100, 4×200, 4×400 and 4x800m relays in addition to the sprint medley, distance medley and shuttle hurdles relays.
The SEC Relays is adding a field-event spin to relays as well.
Field Events will be scored “relay style.” The single highest mark from each institution in each discipline will be added together for a combined four-event total.
Jumps Relay = High Jump + Pole Vault + Long Jump + Triple Jump
Throws Relay = Shot Put + Discus + Javelin + Hammer
Other notes
The Kentucky women’s team is ranked No. 8 and the men’s team is up two spots at No. 20 in this week’s USTFCCCA Computer Rankings.
UK’s women’s team won the LSU Invitational – the SEC Relays’ predecessor – a year ago.
