AWENDAW, South Carolina – The Kentucky men’s golf team saw four Wildcats finish in the top 25 among individuals after the final round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Awendaw, South Carolina. The team finished in sixth place at 4-under par (860), which tied its second-lowest tournament score of the season.
What head coach Brian Craig is saying:
“The Hootie at Bulls Bay is the most unique event in all of college golf. This golf course is deceptively hard and has challenges totally different from what we normally play. We were consistent all week and had a solid finish. A big congratulation to Fred Allen Meyer and the way his game is developing. He did a great job of leading the team this week. We have much work to do, but I still think our best golf is in front of us.”
About the lineup:
Fred Allen Meyer’s game is coming along nicely. He shot his second 1-under par round of the tournament during the final round and tied for 12th at 2-under par – his third-highest placement of the season and best since the General Hackler Championship. The sophomore’s under-par rounds from this week were his lowest since a 69 at the Kenny Perry Invitational. His top-15 finish on Tuesday is his fourth of the season. Meyer’s 54-hole score of 214 is his lowest of the year.
After playing somewhat uncharacteristically in his last two events, senior Stephen Stallings bounced back with a tie for 17th place at 1-under par following his 71 (-1) in the final round. The senior also shot 1-under par on Sunday, which led to his fourth top-20 finish of the season.
Junior Cooper Musselman also fired a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday, which moved him back to even par (216) for the tournament. His tie for 24th is his seventh top-25 finish of the season. He has only placed outside of the top 25 once when he tied for 28th at the General Hackler Championship. Musselman’s pair of under-par rounds at Bulls Bay this week added to the five he had in the previous eight.
Tyler “Chip” McDaniel matched Musselman’s overall finish, which is his also his seventh in the top 25 this season. The All-American from Manchester, Kentucky, shot 1-over par on Tuesday. Matt Liston, who played as an individual, fired a 223 and finished in a tie for 62nd, while Lukas Euler placed in a tie for 65th with a 224.
The Tournament Field:
No. 31 South Carolina won the tournament at 20-under par, while No. 25 Ole Miss placed second at 16-under par. No. 21 Auburn was the third team from the Southeastern Conference that made the top three at 10-under par. The Tigers tied with N.C. State.
UK’s best finish came in 2005 when it won the tournament with an 866 total score. The Wildcats finished in 11th place last season.
