BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kentucky women’s golfer Josephine Chang was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Freshman Golfer of the Week on Tuesday after a career-best performance over the weekend at the Clover Cup.
The SEC Freshman of the Week honor is the just the second in school history and the first since Haley Mills won it in March 2014.
Chang won the award after a career-best 54-hole score and career-best finish at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona. She fired a 3-over-par 219 thanks to back-to-back even-par rounds on the second and third days of the tournament, and finished in a tie for 16th place, the first top-20 showing of her career.
The Rancho Cucamonga, California, native rolled in eight birdies on the weekend, including three birdies and an eagle in the final round to move up the leaderboard.
Although she’s just a freshman, Chang has played with the consistency of an upperclassman. She’s yet to record a round in the 80s, and she has six even- or under-par rounds on the season, second only to Kentucky’s top golfer this season, junior Isabelle Johansson.
With Chang leading the charge this past weekend, UK finished in fifth place at the Clover Cup, its fifth top-five finish in stroke-play tournaments this season. The Wildcats had two all of last year.
Chang and the Wildcats will return to action this weekend at the LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin Friday and end Sunday. It’s part of a three-tournament swing in four weeks before the Southeastern Conference Championship.
