Musselman Ties Career-Low Score at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Georgia – After three exciting days at the Schenkel Invitational, the Kentucky men’s golf team finished in fifth place at 4-under par. UK’s 5-under-par 283 was the third-lowest team score of the day, powered by a career-low 67 (-5) from Cooper Musselman.

 

 

“I am extremely proud of the resilience our guys had over the weekend. This team is coming together and trending in the right direction. We are still a work in progress, but I like what we are capable of if we keep improving. Exceptional play from Cooper Musselman this week to lead the team as well. He is turning into an elite amateur and is super deserving.”

 

 

Playing some of the best golf in the country, Musselman finished in a tie for eighth place, his fourth top-10 placement in the last five events. To no surprise, the junior put his previous round behind him and started off hot again after a blazing 3-under par front nine. Musselman accumulated seven birdies throughout his brilliant final round – four on the front side and three on the back. All three of his sub-70 rounds this season have shown up on the final day of play. 

 

Tyler “Chip” McDaniel followed his best round of the spring season with a 1-under-par performance, which landed him in a tie for 15th at 3-under par. The junior bogeyed two of the first four holes, but kept his composure and canceled out the mistakes after he birdied the seventh and ninth holes. His play carried over into the back nine, nabbing back-to-back birdies at the par-4 11th and par-5 12th. 

 

Lukas Euler also showed great resilience on the front nine. He bounced back with birdies on three of the last four holes after a bogey at the first and finished tied for 29th place at 2-over par. 

 

Stephen Stallings tied for 42nd at 6-over par while Matt Liston, who played as an individual, tied for 46th. Fred Allen Meyer shot 1-under par on the back nine on the final day and placed in a tie for 53rd.

 

 

UK made its 12th-consecutive appearance at the Schenkel Invitational. The Wildcats finished tied for third last season, their best finish other than sole possession of third place during their first appearance back in 2006.

 

Georgia Southern had the lead entering the day, but finished in second place at 16-under par while No. 5 Florida (-18) took home the title after a 6-under-par 282 in round three. No. 2 Vanderbilt finished in third place at 15-under par. The next closest to the three at the top was N.C. State, who finished just a single shot in front of the Wildcats at 5-under par. Kentucky was the third team from the SEC in the top five. 

 

 

Kentucky wastes little time in returning to the course as the Wildcats return to action March 26-28 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational.
