Musselman Leads Cats in Tough Field at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Georgia – The Kentucky men’s golf team sits in 12th place after day one of the Schenkel Invitational, which yielded a 5-over-par team score and a 1-under showing from junior Cooper Musselman. The Wildcats totaled 293 on 18 holes at Forest Heights Country Club on a warm day in Statesboro, Georgia.
What Head Coach Brian Craig is Saying:
“We had a tough day counting two triple bogeys and a double. Tomorrow is a new day, and we will be ready to bounce back. A big salute to Cooper Musselman though, who came back and shot 71. That was huge for our team and showed a ton of grit.”
About the lineup:
Musselman, in a tie for 21st and showing some of his best golf as a Wildcat this season, filed another under-par performance on the course. This time, a 1-under 71 led UK on the first day. Musselman shot his eighth under-par round of 2017, his fourth in his last six tries. He could have gone even lower in the red, but he had a rough start early when he bogeyed the first three holes. The junior was resilient and bounced back with a birdie at the par-3 sixth. Musselman shot 2-over on the side, but played brilliant golf on the back nine, birdieing the 10th hole and two of the final four for a scalding 3-under-par 33.

Stephen Stallings picked up three birdies on the day and ended up with a 1-over-par 73. In this tough field, the senior closed out his round with a birdie at the 18th hole and is tied for 37th place – the second Wildcat in the top-40 individuals.

Tyler “Chip” McDaniel was in a groove at the beginning of his round after he birdied two of the first three holes. He also birdied the par-5 seventh. The junior double-bogeyed the following hole and went on to shoot 2-over par for the day, but is still in the top 50 in a tie for 46th place.

Lukas Euler, Fred Allen Meyer, and Matt Liston combined for seven birdies and fired rounds of 75, 3-over par. They are currently tied for 53rd.

The Tournament Field:

UK is making its 12th-consecutive appearance at the Schenkel Invitational. The Wildcats finished tied for third last season, their best finish other than sole possession of third place during their first appearance back in 2006.

College of Charleston leads the elite field at 9-under par, while host school Georgia Southern is in second and just one stroke behind. No. 32 Lipscomb and Iowa tied for third at 7-under. No. 5 Florida rounds out the top five at 6-under par.
About the Course:
