MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Kentucky men’s golf team sits in a tie for seventh place after the first day of play at the General Hackler Championship on the Dunes Golf & Beach Club on Saturday. The Wildcats played 36 holes at 12-over par and have two individuals in the top 10.
What Head Coach Brian Craig is Saying:
“We played okay today but left a lot of shots out there – way too many to try to get to the top of the leaderboard in a competitive field like this. Tomorrow is a new day though, and the challenge will be significant with a winter storm moving in. It should be a good day to climb the leaderboard.”
About the Lineup:
Sophomore Fred Allen Meyer, playing as an individual, appears to be back on track and is playing some excellent golf. The sophomore fired back-to-back even-par rounds on Saturday – his best scores since the Kenny Perry Invitational and second best of the season. Meyer’s great start placed him in a tie for ninth.
Classmate Lukas Euler burnt up the course during his first round of the day with a 2-under-par 70, which is also his second-best score of the season. The sophomore from Germany ultimately matched Meyer’s finish through the first day after a 2-over-par second round.
Junior Cooper Musselman placed just inside the top 30 on the individual leaderboard and is in a tie for 28th after rounds of 74 and 73 for a 3-over-par 147. Tyler “Chip” McDaniel trails Musselman by one stroke and had a solid even back nine during the second round of the day.
Senior Stephen Stallings started the day with a 4-over-par 76, but cut his second round by three strokes to give him a total of 149. The senior sits in a tie for 45th place at 5-over par. Freshman Matt Liston, playing in his first-career tournament, is 8-over-par after two rounds of 76.
The Tournament Field:
No. 15 Wake Forest leads a very strong field at 15-under par. Kent State, ranked 12th, is 10 strokes behind the Demon Deacons in second place. Ninth-ranked LSU is in third at 3-under par.
About the Course:
Inclement weather is in the forecast for Sunday, but a decision on the final round will not be made until the morning.
The Hackler Championship is scheduled to play a final 18 holes on Sunday at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Club, annually ranked among the top-10 courses in South Carolina. Fans looking to follow the action can find live results on GolfStat.
