COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kentucky rifle team sits comfortably in third place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Rifle Championships, held at Ohio State’s French Field House. Hanna Carr and Billy Azzinaro reached the smallbore final and finished fifth and sixth respectively.

“I am very proud of the fight that this group had today,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “They battled from start to finish, fighting for each point, and showed that their hard work is paying off.”

Prior to the final, Carr fired a 583, which is one point better than she shot last season on the first day of the championships when she led the Cats in the discipline. Azzinaro made his first career appearance in the smallbore finals after a 585 during the team portion.

“It is always great when you have individuals in the final,” Mullins said. “Hanna and Billy making it was remarkable. The team has been working to get all of their smallbore scores above 580, and it was nice to see them accomplish that during NCAAs. I am very proud of the effort they have given in the tournament thus far.”

Sonya May and Jason Spaude just barely missed making the final seven individuals in the discipline. May finished in 11th place after she fired a 582, improving her score from last season’s Championships by three points and tying her second-highest score of the season. Spaude wasn’t far behind as he rounded out the top 15 after he matched his career-best smallbore score of 581.

The Wildcats are in third place just five points off the leader – defending national champion West Virginia (2336) – and TCU sits in second place with 2334.

“Now we have to come out and shoot a good air rifle score like we know we can,” Mullins added.

Air rifle will commence at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.
