LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team collected
two wins on Sunday inside the Boone Tennis Center over Lipscomb and Northern
Kentucky to move to 7-2 this season. UK took down the Bison, 4-1, and swept the
Norse, 4-0.
“I’m really proud of the guys today,” assistant coach Grant
Roberts said. “It’s never easy to play a doubleheader especially after a tough
loss yesterday to Virginia. It was good for us to get these wins and take some
momentum into a big weekend at Ohio State and Indiana.”
In the first match of the day, Lipscomb struck first after
taking two doubles matches. Junior Trey Yates and sophomore Ryotaro Matsumura
won their match 6-1, but LU struck back and took the final two. Victor Chaw and
Rob Mitchell beat No. 23 ranked duo of senior Beck Pennington and sophomore
Enzo Wallart, 6-4. Thais Minet and Phillippe Courteau clinched the doubles
point when they defeated junior Gus Benson and freshman Cesar Bourgois, 6-4.
Kentucky rattled off the next four points in singles play to
clinch the match for the Cats. Pennington breezed past Victor Chaw 6-1, 6-2 to
level the match at one.
Senior Nils Ellefsen won another set in a tiebreaker and
took down Daniel Cardenas, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, to give the Cats a 2-1 advantage.
No. 17 Matsumura was the next to finish after posting a come-from-behind 2-6,
6-1, 6-4 victory.
No. 110 Yates gave UK the win over Lipscomb after defeating Alejandro
Manzanares, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
In the second match, Kentucky wasted no time grabbing the
lead. Matsumura and Yates earned the first doubles win of the match, 6-2.
Bourgois and Benson went through Javier Araya and Adrian Sache, 6-3, to claim
the doubles point.
Bourgois continued his winning ways, as he was the first to
win in singles. Bourgois breezed past Court Clark, 6-2, 6-0 to give UK a 2-0
advantage.
“I think the team did pretty good today as it was tough this
morning to come and compete for a doubleheader against Virginia,” Bourgois
said. “I was happy to win both singles and doubles this afternoon and we’re
looking forward to a good week of training and getting ready for Ohio State
next week.”
Pennington was the next to finish, winning 6-1, 6-4 over
Lukas Clemens to make the match 3-0. Matsumura clinched the second victory of
the day after moving to 7-5, 6-3.
