Kentucky Blanks Marshall 4-0 in Season Opener
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team opened up its spring campaign with a 4-0 victory over Marshall on Wednesday evening.
Kentucky’s young tandem of freshman Lesedi Jacobs and sophomore Justina Mikulskyte were the first to see success, posting a 6-2 win over Marshall’s Daniela Dankanych and Stephanie Smith. Despite Morgan Chumney and Akvile Paražinskaite dropping their match 6-4, UK secured the doubles point as No. 1-ranked Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi earned a hard-fought 6-4 victory over Marshall’s Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya.
In singles, Mikulskyte claimed the first individual victory with a quick 6-0, 6-2 win in No. 4 singles. Jacobs was the next to strike, downing Rachael Morales, 6-0, 6-3 to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of the Blue and White.
On the No. 2 court, the Wildcats’ final win came as No. 74 Paražinskaite downed No. 94 Maddie Silver in a 6-2, 6-4 decision.
The Wildcats will have a quick turnaround, as they return to action Jan. 20-22 at the Miami Spring Invite in Coral Gables, Florida. The tournament will feature Kentucky’s first Southeastern Conference foe of the championship season in Vanderbilt, as well as host-school Miami and Big 12 opponent Texas Tech.
