UK Men’s Tennis Opens 2017 with Pair of Wins Against EKU and Dayton
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team
opened the 2017 season with a bang on Monday, collecting two wins over Eastern
Kentucky and Dayton to start the season 2-0.
“It was a good start for
us,” head coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “That score without Trey and Ryo is
really good and we have good depth. I thought William and Beck played well
today. We have some things to work on in doubles but we are going to be much
better than last year and I look forward to facing Duke on Friday.”
Kentucky has now started
2-0 for the fifth-straight season under Kauffmann.
Starting the day off with doubles, sophomore Enzo
Wallart and senior Nils Ellefsen defeated Guillem Sanchis and Diego Asis of EKU,
6-4. In his first match with UK, freshman Cesar Bourgois teamed up with junior Jake
Stefanik, taking down Parth Aggarwal and Romain Soffels, 6-4. Finishing off the
doubles matches against EKU, junior Will Bushamuka and senior Beck Pennington fought
off Ramon van Flymen and Sebastion Mueller of EKU 7-5.
Kentucky earned all six singles points and did not
drop a set during singles play. Ellefsen was the first to close out his
opponent, earning a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sebastion Mueller. Next to finish was Pennington,
winning 6-2, 6-3 over EKU’s Aggarwal.
Bushamuka defeated Ramon van Flymen 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) in the third singles
match up to clinch the victory for the Wildcats.
Shortly following the third match, UK’s Wallart
took down EKU’s Sanchis 6-2, 6-4. The last two matches were shortened due to
Kentucky having the match in hand. Bourgois defeated Stoffels, 8-0, and
Stefanik bested Dan Lineberry, 8-4.
The day continued with the Wildcats facing Dayton.
Wallart and Ellefsen defeated Lorenzo Rollhauser
and Jordan Benjamin 6-3 to start the match with UD. UK’s Borgois and junior Gus
Benson teaming up to take on Andy Druffel and Simon Jayaram. The duo of Benson
and Borgois won 7-6 (7-5) in a hotly contested match. The third match including
Bushamuka and Pennington against Carsten Fisher and Zach Berry was unfinished
due to UK clinching the point.
Singles started with a match up against UK’s
Pennington and Benjamin of UD, finishing 4-1 (Ret.) due to an injury with
Benjamin. Following the first match, Ellefsen took on Jayaram and won 6-2,
6-2. Wallart went in a match up against
Berry resulting 6-2, 6-4 giving UK another point.
The fourth match of the day consisted of Kentucky’s
Benson and Dayton’s Druffel with Benson winning 8-2. Bushamuka took on Fisher
in a heated match finishing with a tiebreaker resulting in Bushamuka winning
6-3, 7-6(7-3). In a shortened match, junior Gus Benson won 8-0 over Druffel.
The only loss of the day was a tight 3-6, 6-7 (7-2) defeat of Jake Stefanik
from Rollhauser.
Kentucky will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 20
