Rifle Picks Up Seventh Top-20 Win of Season

Oxford, Miss. – The
fifth-ranked Kentucky rifle team added two more ranked wins – moving to seven
ranked wins overall – after this weekend’s competition. The Wildcats defeated
No. 10 Memphis, 4660-4607, on Sunday after they took down No. 13 Ole Miss on
Saturday, 4664-4624. UK came up just short against third-ranked Murray State,
which scored 4708 in the tri-match.
Kentucky is now 13-3 overall
and undefeated at 6-0 in the Great American Rifle Conference.
In Saturday’s tri-match with
the Rebels and Racers, the Wildcats fired a 2357 in air rifle and a 2307 in
smallbore.
Heather Kirby was the
high-finisher for Kentucky after she captured her second-highest smallbore
score of the season, 580, and shot a 592 in air rifle for an 1172 aggregate.
Jason Sharbel fired a 581 in
smallbore, which matched his season-high score in the discipline. He went on to
shoot 584 in air rifle to compile an 1165 aggregate.
Sophomore Hanna Carr and senior
Sonya May rounded out the top-10 for the Wildcats after they finished at 1164
and 1163 respectively.
Kentucky shot a 2362 in air
rifle and 2298 in smallbore during Sunday’s meeting with the Tigers.
Wildcat individuals owned the
six best scores of the ten overall while Kirby led the way again.
Kirby, a Shelbyville, Kentucky,
native, tied her second-best air rifle score, 596, for the second time this
season and added a 576 in smallbore for an 1172 aggregate score.
Carr took second place with an 1163 aggregate comprised of a 586
in air rifle and 577 in smallbore.
May and Sharbel matched Carr’s aggregate. May equaled her
third-highest air rifle score of the season, 590, for the second time while
Sharbel fired one point better than he did on Sunday in air rifle with a 585.
Junior Billy Azzinaro tied his third-highest air rifle score as
well after he fired a 590 and finished in fifth place overall.
Jason Spaude fired a 585 in air rifle and went on to finish in
sixth place.
The Wildcats will travel to Murray, Kentucky, for the Withrow
Invitational on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range on the Murray
State campus.
