Wildcats Sweep ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships Titles

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team captured both the singles and doubles titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Monday. Both wins came over Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt, as senior Aldila Sutjiadi defeated No. 12 Sydney Campbell in the singles final, and UK’s tandem of Justina Mikulskyte/Lesedi Jacobs ousted Astra Sharma/Emma Kurtz to secure automatic entries to the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 3-6.
“I am extremely happy for our team today,” said Kentucky head coach Carlos Dradá. “Our players all exhibited a high level of commitment to our principles, and were able to take steps in the right direction. A performance like today’s is a reminder that we are capable of great things when we stick to fundamentals, listen and stay in the present. If one of our players can do it, anyone on our team can do it. The way our ladies competed today was a choice. A 100 percent effort all the time is all we can really control.”
Having only dropped one set in the tournament, Sutjiadi came into the championship match barely blemished. She held onto that streak to take down Campbell in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(5). The win gives the senior her second bid to the UTSA/ITA Indoor Championships on the year, as Sutjiadi and doubles partner Mami Adachi won the ITA All-American Championships doubles consolation draw earlier this month to earn entrance to the tournament.
A young duo, sophomore Mikulskyte and freshman Jacobs earned a quick victory over the Commodores veteran combination of Sharma/Kurtz, 6-3, 6-4 in the title match. The UK pair glided through the tournament without ever having to face a tiebreak.
This will mark the third consecutive year the Wildcats have been represented in the Indoor Championships, all of which included appearances by Sutjiadi. However, this will be the first time she has qualified for the singles draw.
Last year’s Indoor Championships saw Adachi and Sutjiadi advance to the doubles title match, but the pair fell to No. 15 Haley Carter/Whitney Kay of North Carolina.
The National Indoor Championships will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The tournament serves as the final major tournament of the fall season and will feature top players from across the country. To gain automatic entry, student-athletes must be champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl or consolation champions or doubles finalists from the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.
