MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team continued to shine on Sunday, as it won 4-of-5 matches to advance to the final rounds in main draws of singles and doubles of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional Championships. Senior Aldila Sutjiadi is set to represent the Blue and White in singles, while Justina Mikulskyte/Lesedi Jacobs will vie for the doubles’ title.

“Being in the finals at the regional tournament is not an easy feat to accomplish,” said Kentucky assistant coach Federico Sabogal. “We’ve seen a very high level of play this weekend from all the participating schools. Having Aldila, Justina and Sedi in the finals is a big step in the right direction for us. They have played really great tennis these past few days, playing aggressive in big moments and being mentally tough throughout their matches.”

The only loss on the day came as Parazinskaite and Sutjiadi were slotted to face one another in the semifinal round of the singles competition. To start the day, both Wildcats breezed through the quarterfinal round. Sutjiadi downed Vanderbilt’s Christina Rosca in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, while Parazinskaite defeated Commodore Fernanda Contreras, 7-5, 6-3. Unfortunately, only one Wildcat could come out on top in the semifinals. Sutjiadi was the Wildcat to survive, overcoming her teammate in a 6-3, 7-6(5) decision.

“It was really special for Carlos and I to see Akvile and Aldila play each other in the semis. It takes a lot of courage and professionalism to compete against your teammate at the highest level while representing your school,” said Sabogal. “They played a really good match and we are super pleased and excited for what’s yet to come.”

In Monday’s championship round, No. 23 Sutjiadi will take on fellow Southeastern Conference senior, No. 12 Sydney Campbell from Vanderbilt. Campbell finds herself in a familiar spot, as she’s been crowned the regional singles’ champion the past two seasons. Sutjiadi will look to strip her of that title in order to earn her second berth into next month’s UTSA/ITA National Indoor Championships.

UK’s duo of Mikulskyte and Jacobs will represent Kentucky in Monday’s championship doubles match, as the pair defeated Campbell/Rosca, 6-1, 7-5 on Sunday. The tandem will take on yet another Vanderbilt duo in second-seeded Astra Sharma/Emma Kurtz. Sharma will be the lone player to return to the doubles title match this season, after facing Kentucky’s Sutjadi/Mami Adachi in last year’s regional when UK won 6-3, 6-4.

Both of Monday’s title matches are slated for a 9:30 a.m. start. The winners will secure bids to the UTSA/ITA Indoor Championships, which will be held Nov. 3-6 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The tournament serves as the final major tournament of the fall season, and gives student-athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the toughest competitors in the country.
