Auburn Scores Two Unanswered Goals to Come Back and Down UK
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 18 Auburn Tigers
scored two unanswered goals after Kentucky grabbed an early lead on 13 minutes
in the match to defeat the Kentucky women’s soccer team 2-1 on Thursday night
at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington.
With the result, Kentucky drops three games
below .500 and now sits at 4-7-2 overall and on one point at 0-5-1 in the
Southeastern Conference.
The opening goal was scored 13 minutes into
the match as Marissa Bosco scored her second goal of the season to put the
Wildcats ahead, 1-0. Tanya Samarzich got the ball wide, and played a cross into
the area for Zoe Swift. Swift headed the ball back across the face of goal
where it was there for the taking for Bosco to hammer home her second tally of
the year. The goal was UK’s first shot and first shot on goal of the match.
After holding the lead for much of the first
half, Kentucky succumbed to the Auburn pressure in the 42nd minute
as Bri Folds scored her second goal of the year after she made a run into the
area unmarked and finished a cross from Brooke Ramsier for the equalizer.
The teams went into the locker room with
honors even at 1-1 before Kristen Dodson scored in the 52nd minute
in what turned out to be the match-winner. Dodson was played a ball from the
left side by Casie Ramsier before her twin sister, Brooke, got the ball from a
wide area and started the attack off a turnover in the middle of the field.
Kentucky had the better of the play in the
latter stages of the second half, including two corners inside the final 10
minutes, but were unable to mount any significant threats to close out the
game, as Auburn saw out the final minutes well.
Kentucky returns to action on Sunday afternoon
at 2 p.m. ET against the Vanderbilt Commodores on the road in Nashville.
Coverage of the match can be seen live on the SEC Network+, ESPN3 and
WatchESPN.
