Eric Quigley Qualifies for U.S. Open in Doubles

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky
tennis alum Eric Quigley qualified for the U.S. Open in the doubles competition
on Wednesday afternoon, winning a three-set affair in New Haven, Connecticut to
advance into the grand slam.

Quigley and his doubles partner Nicolas
Meister (USA) paired up to win the championship match of the US Open qualifying
series’ Connecticut Open, 2-6, 6-3, 12-10 in a third set super tiebreak, as the
Pewee Valley, Ky., native booked his first ticket to his nation’s national
championship.

“We are all extremely proud of Eric,” UK head
coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “Eric has worked hard to get to this spot and we
are excited for him and his family to be able to watch him live out his dream
of playing in the US Open next week.”

“I think it’s great,” former Kentucky head coach
Dennis Emery said. “One of his goals since he was a young boy was to play in
the US Open, and he deserves this opportunity. He has worked incredibly hard to
get to this point, and we will all be rooting him on.”

Quigley is also still in the US Open playoff draw
in the mixed doubles tonight, which would give him a spot in the US Open mixed
doubles competition.

The US Open kicks off on Aug. 28 from the
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The event will
be exclusively televised by ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 with all-day coverage of all
courts coming via the WatchESPN app.
