Camacho-Quinn, Sorrillo Agonizingly Miss Rio Olympic Finals

RIO DE JANEIRO – Jasmine Camacho-Quinn showed her astronomic talent and potential over eight hurdles in her Olympic 100-meter hurdles semifinal. Then Kentucky track and field fans and the sporting world more broadly were reminded just how unforgiving the 100m hurdles is as an event Wednesday.
Camacho-Quinn who completed her spectacular freshman season by representing Puerto Rico at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad was disqualified in the second semifinal heat.
Known for her burst in the latter stages of races Camacho-Quinn was running with the leaders – including eventual Silver Medalist Nia Ali – when she hit the ninth hurdle low and then knocked over hurdle No. 10. From there she could only jog across the line in a time clocked at 13.81. She was soon disqualified presumably for not clearing the 10th hurdle.
“As much as it hurts that I am not in finals, I can say I’m proud of myself,” Camacho-Quinn said. “Thank you everyone for supporting me. One bad race does not define who I am or my future. Minor setback for a major comeback.”
Camacho-Quinn will return to Lexington where she will start the new semester next week. She trains at UK with her world-record holder training partner Kendra Harrison under head coach Edrick Floréal.
Camacho-Quinn became the first freshman to win the NCAA 100m hurdles Championship in 2016. She also won the SEC Championship and the NACAC U23 Championship.
Alumnus Rondel Sorrillo – the 2009 NCAA 200-Meter Champion who now serves on the UK track and field staff as a volunteer assistant coach while training under Floréal’s direction and competing for Nike – did not advance out of the 200m semifinals.
He placed fifth in his heat in 20.33 (-0.4). His time was the 14th fastest of the semifinals
Sorrillo – representing Trinidad and Tobago – is also scheduled to compete in Rio in the 4x100m relay. He ran the heats of the 100m on Saturday.
Thursday will see Class of 2015 alumna Leah Nugent in the 400m hurdles final at 9:15 p.m. ET. She will run out of lane two. That race falls in the NBC primetime broadcast window.
Trinidad and Tobago will be in the second 4x100m relay preliminary heat during the Thursday morning session at 11:43 a.m. ET. That race is likely to be shown on NBC Sports Network.
The networks of NBC own the broadcast rights for the Olympic Games in the United States. All track and field at the games will be streamed live via nbcolympics.com and the NBC Sports app.

Wildcats Andrew Evans (Team USA), Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico), Nugent (Jamaica), Sorrillo (T&T), Luis Orta (Venezuela) and Mikel Thomas (Trinidad and Tobago) are also competing in athletics at the Rio Olympic Games.
Camacho-Quinn and alumni Nugent and Sorrillo all train at Kentucky under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction.
The athletics portion of the Olympic Games will run until Sunday, Aug. 21, which is the day of closing ceremonies.C
