Evan Cox Joins UK Men’s Golf

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After winning the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament, Ashland, Ky., native Evan Cox is set to join head coach Brian Craig and the Kentucky men’s golf team for his junior and senior seasons.
“I could not be more excited to add Evan to our roster for this fall,” Craig said. “Evan is a late bloomer and a proven player. He has played awfully well this year, including winning the Division III National Championship. However, I really believe Evan’s best golf is in front of him. His high desire and high character make him a perfect fit for our program. I look forward to coaching Evan for the next two years and helping him continue to grow and get better.”
Cox, who attended Paul G. Blazer High School, joined Virginia Wesleyan College in 2014 and became the program’s first national champion after he birdied the eighth hole in a playoff at Midvale Country Club this spring.
In his first collegiate season, Cox was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and All-ODAC Second Team after he led the Marlins in scoring average and nabbed three top-10 finishes, one of which came at the ODAC Championship.
During his sophomore campaign, Cox was named a First-Team All-American, ODAC Golfer of the Year, and All-ODAC First Team, while again leading the team with a 72.4 scoring average. In 10 events, he had four wins, which included a nine-stroke win margin at the ODAC Championship and a career-best round of 64 during his run at the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament. Cox compiled seven top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes. Even more impressive, he finished in the top 25 in every tournament of the season.
In high school, he was named to the 2012 Kentucky All-State Golf Team, All-Region 12 Golf Team, and was the Region 12 Player of the Year Runner-Up while he competed in three Kentucky State Golf Championships.
Cox will join fall signees Allen Hamilton, Jacob Cook and Matt Liston, along with recent signee, Max Mehles, for the 2016-17 class.
