CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Beckie Famurewa and Caroline McCaslin broke the Kentucky school records in the hammer throw and 3,000-meter steeplechase respectively, UK’s women’s 4x100m relay ran the No. 3-ranked time in the nation this year and three more hammer throwers tossed personal bests to begin the Virginia Challenge in strong fashion on Friday.
Famurewa won the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 211’9″/64.55 meters, which would rank No. 8 in NCAA entering the day. The throw was more than two feet better than Kristen Smith’s previous school record, thrown in 2009. It was 3’1” better than Famurewa’s previous PR, which she recorded in San Diego last season.
Kentucky’s 4x100m relay of Javianne Oliver, Precious Hitchcock, Destiny Carter and Kianna Gray ran 43.14 to win in a time, which ranks No. 2 in the NCAA based on the descending order list entering the day. The time was also second fastest in school history.
McCaslin ran 10:18.32 for ninth place in the steeplechase. The time broke Katy Kunc’s school-record recorded at the Florida Relays earlier this season by about four seconds. It was about a 13-second PR.
David Cline placed second in the men’s hammer throw with more than a four-foot PR: 205’11″/62.77m. Logan Bryer placed third also with a nearly two-foot PR 204’4″/62.28m.
Brandi Walker began the day with a PR in the hammer throw, 193’1”/58.87m, which moved her into the No. 4 spot on the UK all-time performers’ list.
Kiah Seymour and Jasmine Mitchell went 2-3 in the 400m with respective times of 52.65 and 54.04.
Kentucky’s women’s sprinters claimed the top five spots in the women’s 100m. Destiny Carter won with a wind-legal season best 11.43 (+0.4). Kianna Gray and Javianne Oliver finished in a tie for second with wind-legal season-best times of 11.47. Jasmine Quinn was fourth in 11.61 and Hitchcock was fifth in 11.67 running into a -0.9 headwind.
UK alum Rondel Sorrillo won the 100m in 10.23 (+1.6). Fred Dorsey placed fourth in 10.49.
Marie-Josée Ebwea-Bile placed third in the elite triple jump with a best mark of 42’5.25″/12.93m.
The competition continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the additional sections of the 3k steeplechase.
Jacob Thomson will run for the first time since late March in the 1,500m on Saturday. In his last competition he ran a 10k time of 29:01.34, which still ranks No. 8 nationally.
The UK women’s team is ranked No. 8 in the nation.
Kentucky will travel to the LSU Invitational next week and host the Kentucky Relays the following Saturday before the SEC Championships May 12-14.
