COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  – Kentucky rifle freshman Hanna Carr claimed the USA Shooting Junior Olympics Championship in women’s three-position rifle on Sunday.
Carr won in a dramatic final that came down to the final shot, 1177-1176, over TCU’s Rachel Garner.
“Today was definitely a lot of fun,” Carr said. “The competition during the final was amazing and it was so crazy that the overall finish came down to one last shot. Nobody shot a bad final either, it wasn’t like everyone shot poorly and that’s why we finished the way we did.
“Everyone shooting so well made it so much more fun.”
Carr performed well over two days of qualification matches. She fired a 587 on day one and a 582 on day two.
“I am proud of the work Hanna has done leading up to this,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “It’s great to see her get rewarded for the work she has put into this season. I couldn’t be more proud of the effort she’s given this year.”
Carr’s steely resolve has become a trademark in her freshman season as she won the Great American Rifle Conference air rifle title by 0.1 points in late February.
“This afternoon Hanna did a great job of staying focused during each stage of the final to win,” UK assistant coach Rena Goodwin said from Colorado Springs. “We are proud of her and are looking forward to moving into air gun starting tomorrow morning.”
UK freshmen Cathryn Papasodora placed 16th with a match score of 1137 and Carmen Fry placed 18th with a 1133.
