Meyer Shines on Final Day of Tiger Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. – Freshman Fred Allen Meyer moved up 19 spots on the third day of the Tiger Invitational, where the Kentucky men’s golf team finished in seventh place overall. The freshman from Nicholasville, Ky., finished the third day in Auburn with an even-par, 72, to close out in a tie for 31st overall on the individual leaderboard. Meyer improved his play each day and capped the tournament with the team-low round of the day.

What head coach Brian Craig is saying:

“If we were a basketball team, we missed almost all of our layups this week. It has been a while since we played like this but there is no worry whatsoever. This might be the best thing that could have happened to us. Weaknesses were exposed and now it is time to get back to work before bouncing back at the Schenkel.”

About the lineup:

Meyer charted five birdies, finishing the opening nine with a 2-under, 34, before finishing the day with two birdies in the closing half. The Co-Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week last week moved up 19 spots on the individual leaderboard on the final day, finishing with a tie for 31st. He was the biggest mover for the Wildcats throughout the tournament. 

Along with Meyer, sophomore Cooper Musselman turned in a final round of 72. Musselman played a fairly even third round, charting two birdies in the opening nine with even scores the rest of the way. He closed out the tournament with an overall score of 7-over, 223, and tied for 28th place on the individual leaderboard to lead the way individually for the Cats. 

Sophomore Tyler ‘Chip’ McDaniel finished his third round of play with a 6-over, 78, charting an 8-over, 224, overall. Individually, McDaniel tied Meyer for 31st place on the leaderboard. 

 

Senior David Snyder finished day three at Grand National with a 4-over, 76 score. The senior from Somerset, Ky., tied for 43rd on the individual leaderboard, wrapping up the tournament with a combined score of 10-over, 226.

Junior Stephen Stallings capped the tournament in a tie for 63rd through three rounds of action. Sophomore Chris Meuth, playing as an individual, closed out the tournament in a tie for 78th. Meuth turned in the most consistent play of any Wildcat with three-straight rounds of 78.

The Tournament Field:

Troy knocked off No. 4 Auburn to finish on top at the Tiger Invitational. The Trojans finished the three-day tournament with a combined score of 2-under, 862, the only team to finish with an under-par score. Auburn took home runner-up status at 1-over, 865, with the University of North Carolina-Greensboro finishing in third place with a 14-over, 878, team score. Auburn and Kennesaw State tied for fourth place, both charting 15-over, 879, scores to finish the 54-hole tournament.

Up Next for the Wildcats: 

Kentucky will return to action for its third spring tournament of the season on Friday, March 18 at the Schenkel Invitational. The tournament will play in a three-day format, March 18-20, in Statesboro, Ga. The teams will compete on the Forest Heights Country Club course.
