Meyer Tabbed Co-SEC Freshman of the Week

It’s been quite the week for Kentucky’s Fred Allen Meyer who suited up for the Wildcats at the Puerto Rico Classic to play competitive golf for the first time in 17 months. Now a week later, he is the league’s co-freshman of the week for his performance in his first tournament in more than a year as announced by the SEC on Wednesday.

Meyer was a member of UK’s starting five at the Puerto Rico Classic, the spring opener for the Wildcats. He finished the tournament in a tie for 52nd overall, but his performance over the final two rounds paved the way for Kentucky’s impressive fourth place finish.

UK’s freshman charted rounds of 74 and 69 to close out the tournament with the final round 69 being the team’s low round for the day. 

“This is simply fabulous and a testament to his character and perseverance,” head coach Brian Craig said following Meyer’s round of 69 last week. 

He charted four birdies and an eagle on the par-five 15th to highlight the round. Furthermore, he shot a 5-under par over his final 14 holes of play to end the tournament in style. 

This is the first such honor of the season for the Wildcats and the first of Meyer’s young career. UK will return to action on Sunday at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn University. The three-day 54-hole event will take place at the Grand National Lake Course in Auburn, Ala.
