FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kentucky will begin its first postseason competition of 2016 – The SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Arkansas’ Tyson Indoor Track Center.
The meet will run Friday-Saturday, beginning at noon ET both days.
The UK women’s team is ranked No. 15.
The SEC Indoor Championships will be streamed live on SEC Network + Friday from 4:55-9:15 p.m. ET and Saturday from 3:55-8:30 p.m. The meet will also air as part of a two-hour show on ESPN on Sunday at 7 p.m. The broadcast talent includes Dwight Stones, Larry Rawson and SportsCenter’s John Anderson.
The Nation’s Best Conference Meet
A total of 13 SEC men’s and women’s track and field teams are ranked among the nation’s top-25 teams, according to the latest national rankings announced Monday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Precedent
Last season as SEC Indoor Championships hosts, the UK women’s track and field team earned a fourth-place finish.
The fourth-place result was the second-highest finish and point total in program history. UK finished fourth overall with 76 points, which was the second highest score ever by a UK women’s team, bettering the 2014 fourth-place total by 4 points. Kentucky’s best-ever women’s finish was third with 92 points in 1989.
A year ago, the UK men’s team finished 12th with 22 points.
Friday Event to Watch
Junior Sha’Keela Saunders is the defending SEC Indoor Long Jump Champion. She appears poised for a high-stakes showdown with some of the nation’s best in the event, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
Three of the top four and five of the top 10 jumpers in the nation are in the field. Saunders’ (owner of the No. 3 jump in the nation this year) won her last meet: the Tyson Invitational on the same runway Friday’s competition will take place on.
But defending SEC and NCAA Outdoor Long Jump Champion Quanesha Burks is the nation’s leader this year, while Georgia’s Chanice Porter (T-No. 3) and Keturah Orji (No. 6) also have the exhibited the quality to contend, this year.
